Knowing what to do when building your first website is one of the things most people just starting out find the hardest. 3. Link the graphics using HTML tags to your page this way they appear where you want them to. The quality of the image effects loading time to your page so if possible keep the images small then create a link to where the image can be viewed on it's own larger if the viewer decides they want to view it in more detail. Doing this keeps people from exiting your page due to slow loading.

4. Preview your page in your web browser and other browsers, see how it looks to you. sometimes you see it with rose colored glasses, leave it for a day and come back and view it again the next day. Are you still happy with the way it looks?

5. Find a space on a web server a.k.a. host. If its a personal site that is not too big you can go to GeoCities, Google Page Creator, or AOL.com in any of these places you can post a personal website however there is a limit what you can do on the service because it is free. If you go beyond what they allow they will remove your site. Read the agreement, and follow their rules. For business sites you will want to find paid hosting. This can really differ in price depending on the web host and the package you choose. Take some time when doing this you want to know what you will be getting for your money. Look around, compare services and prices if a host doesn't have a feature you need keep looking. If the package they offer looks great type in "Hosting + Review" into a search and see what other people are saying about the service. You can also set up your own private server but that takes a lot of technical know how and if it is something that you really want to consider there are many pit falls to but also a great number of bonuses way the pros and cons.

6. Use File Transfer Protocol a.k.a. FTP to transfer your HTML files and Graphic files to the web server. 7. Get online. Check to see that your web site is working properly. Click the links on you site to make sure they are work and get take you exactly where you had intended them to. Broken links frustrate visitors or guests (as I like to call them) to your site and what will hurt more is that the spiders (or web crawlers) that come to index your pages really don't like links that don't work and could be penalize your site for it.

When I first meet with a client, one of the things we do is attempt to determine the purpose of their website. On a website planning worksheet we use, there is a list of purposes many websites have in common. The client goes through the list and ranks the items in order of importance. So the most important item will be 1, and there will only be one item labelled with a 1.

Here are the items in that list:

To gain a favorable impression of the company or organization.
To develop a qualified list of prospects
To sell products directly taking credit card information over the Internet
To encourage potential customers to contact us by phone or mail to consummate a sale
To make available product information and price lists to distributors
To make available product information and price lists to customers
To strengthen brand identification

Another good idea is to come up with a succinct mission statement for your site. You might even come up with one for your eyes only, then one that can be used as a tagline of sorts on your site.

One of our clients, The Christian Chronicle, has a good example. Their tagline on their site is "An international news source for members of churches of Christ." They've identified not only what the site is all about, but even the target audience for the site. An internal mission statement for the Chronicle might be "Provide impartial reporting of news relevant to members of the churches of Christ."

Before I begin this discussion explaining RSS to you as if I were this fount of knowledge that clearly recognized its value from the very first moment I saw it, the fact is that my initial impression after a cursory look-over several years ago was that it was only useful to blogs and news-oriented sites. Outside of syndicating teasers of news headlines and blog posts, not a single aspect of its current usage occurred to me, and I never expected it to become an indispensable part of standard web development or to redefine the web as I knew it. So, if you can forgive me that incredible oversight, then we can get on with this…

RSS as an Update Announcer

To explain what RSS is and why it has everyone so excited, let me just start out on common ground with something we already know, a traditional website. Traditionally, a website contained whatever content may have been put on it and that content may be static or may change constantly. The problem here has always been that a user had no way of knowing when or if that content had changed other than checking back periodically or being notified by someone.

RSS solved that problem by "announcing" content updates. A site owner creates a special file called an RSS file along with a link to it, and this creates a "web feed." A web feed is a data format used for sending users content updates. Users have the option of "subscribing" to this feed either through a stand-alone desktop application called a "feed reader," through an online content aggregator like Newsburst, or, increasingly, directly through their standard web browser. Once subscribed, users are notified whenever there's new content posted to the feed. That's all well and good, but it doesn't end there.

RSS Web Feeds

An RSS web feed is actually just an XML-based file that sits on a site like any other file and contains whatever content the site owner wants to put into it for distribution. It can be created and maintained manually or dynamically (preferably the latter.) Part 3 of this series will cover the creation of such feeds. There's not really a lot to it.

I don't want to lose you in the terminology or the acronyms here. An XML document--especially of the type we're talking about here--is an extremely simple text document. The markup has certain similarities to HTML, but where HTML defines how to display the content, XML categorizes the content (for instance, identifying title, description, author, etc.) and does it in a machine-readable format which means that different software on different operating systems on different platforms can easily access and display that content. This is the part that allows for syndication. Numerous applications exist that look for such files, read the content, and parse it back out for use elsewhere.

RSS for Content Syndication

Content syndication is (by definition) the primary use of RSS. Originally, RSS files listed just the title of a piece, the author, the date of publication, a link back to the original content, and a quick summary to act as a kind of teaser to get you to go back to the original site to read the article--hence the mistaken view that it was only good for blog posts and news headlines. Now it includes syndication of full content--including HTML--along with "enclosures" to contain multimedia content like images, audio files, and video files and that content is being used in ever more imaginative ways. This needn't scare you away from using it.

RSS Content Usage

Primarily, RSS syndicated web content simply turns up in some form of RSS reader for the usage of an individual who wants to remain informed of content updates on your site. However, this syndication of content along with the inherent extensibility of XML allows for a kind of web presence and sharing of content that was never available before. It's the underlying workhorse or building block of the entire "Web 2.0" movement.

Web content stored and distributed in this manner can be accessed and processed in ways similar to database applications allowing your content to simply be replicated elsewhere or become the basis for an application built on the underlying data. It can turn up as content on another website. It's absolutely adored by search engines (practically search bot candy) which will often index it far faster and with better results than equivalent content on a standard HTML page.

Think syndication, not coordination. Simple web services, like RSS…are about syndicating data outwards, not controlling what happens when it gets to the other end of the connection. This idea is fundamental to the internet itself, a reflection of what is known as the end-to-end principle.

As much as I agree with the ideal expressed here by Tim O'Reilly, I tend to take a more pragmatic approach. I encourage you, if you're considering RSS syndication of your content, to set up a Creative Commons License allowing for the distribution of your content while requiring the retention of source attribution and backlinking. It's not that you don't want anyone else to use your content, but you should get something out of it as well. The idea here is not only to increase your web presence but also your underlying user base.

With all this background in mind, we can get more directly into what RSS actually is. Wikipedia puts it this way:

The hardcore purists out there aren't going to be too happy with this series of articles, because my focus, as I start describing how to create an RSS feed in the next article, will be on RSS 2.0, Dave Winer's "Really Simple Syndication." I've chosen that particular "flavor" of RSS because it allows me to really bring home the incredible simplicity of syndicating web content. My point here is to encourage more RSS usage, not scare anyone away.

What Are The Benefits of RSS?

I've only touched on some of the benefits of having an RSS feed. Things like the inherent search engine optimization are secondary to the incredible expansion of your audience that comes about through content syndication. You reach people that you would never have reached before. You're able to communicate with them and show them the value of your site and business as a resource.

It's perfectly acceptable to sell advertising on your feed. Keep this in mind always, unlike other methods of advertising, every single person reading your feed has willingly opted-in to receive your message. They won't consider it spam.

Where Do I Get The Content?

The question of where to get the content to feed out always amazes me. Unless your site is absolutely static, unless there's nothing there that changes, unless it's the online equivalent of a pre-printed brochure, you have content to syndicate. Even the tiniest websites are not excluded from this, because it's not about having money for great content productions.

If your business updates any of its site content--even if it's only once or twice a month--you have content to syndicate. Anything from product announcements to job postings represent syndicatable web content. Each of these can be fed into separate RSS files and syndicated separately. Each of them can be used to expand your business branding, presence, user base, message, and sales reminders. Each of them will take their own roads through the Internet and reach people you would never have reached otherwise.

Some Final Words

RSS is an incredibly powerful tool easily implemented with enormous benefits going far beyond the site itself. I implore you, if you haven't done it already, then, for the good of your site, for the good of your business, and for the good of your users, please, please, feed your site.

I have a few more I would like to share with you. You do not need to do all of these, but the goal would still be to try and have 5 different sources of income.

I originally left out your primary job. This will be your biggest source of income initially and maybe the entire time. I recommend getting the highest paying job you can. This is extremely helpful as you start to get raises and bonuses are paid out according to salary. Always take the money. Also, this is what will be paying your bills why you are getting the other streams up and running.

Another source of income can be taking surveys. There are many corporations ready to pay you for your opinion. Most of these can be done from home, and in front of your computer. Every now and then you may be asked to be a mystery shopper. They might ask you to evaluate the customer service at a restaurant or retail store. The company asking for the survey will pay for the meal or merchandise, and pay you for your time. Surveys can be a very economical way of adding to your multiple streams of income.

Interest income will also supply monthly income. This will require a little more money invested up front though. In return for your initial investment, you can make a monthly income based off of the interest. This could be investing in a start up company, purchasing some sort of municipal bonds, or even putting money into a money market. These will all pay a monthly amount of money. If you can find a good tax free bond, probably through the state, you can make some pretty decent money this way. You may be asking, why invest the $20,000 into bonds, so I can only return $166 per month (at 10%). The point is your money is safe, will stay the same in value, and gives you money each month. The name of the game is cash flow.

Investing is another strategy. A good example of this will be investing in the stock market. You would take any amount of money, find a good stock, and buy some shares. Keep an eye on it, and if you hit the target price you are looking for, sell it. You can make some money this way. And like wise, you can lose some money this way. Always be sure that whatever money you invest in the market you can afford to lose.

Maybe it's just me, but I doubt it. I go to some, okay, most websites and they are so busy and poorly laid out that I just get lost in all the text and graphics. And I'm not even getting into how the site navigates. Was there some class in web design school that said white space is bad?

Let it be known, I'm not formally trained in web design. And I don't consider myself a web designer. I would consider myself a web developer. I build sites in basic html. I have built quite a few sites for myself and for others. I have also viewed tens of thousands of other people's sites. It is from these experiences as both a designer/developer and a consumer/user perspective that I have come to find most sites missing the mark.

Now I'm not trying to be overly critical, but there are a few key elements where I think most sites could be better. I'm assuming that most people or businesses with a web site would like it to be effective.

First, what the heck is the site about? What are you selling? What are you trying to communicate? What is your message? What do you stand for/against? If I can't figure out what it's all about in a few seconds, I move on.

Second, back to the whole idea of white space. And this does tie into the first point. If there's so much verbiage and so many graphics that I can't focus on one area. How long is it going to take me to figure out what the heck the site is about? I'm not here to read a novel, just get the information and get out. Again, if I can't figure out what it's all about in a few seconds, I move on.

Third, how long does it take for your site to load? I'm all for nice graphics and a professional looking site. However, I have a high speed broadband connection and it takes 30 seconds or more for some sites to load. That's way too long. If your graphics are in the way of site function, then maybe they need to be rethought. And again, as stated in the first and second points, if I can't figure out what it's all about, or even view the site within a few seconds, I move on.

This is something I ran into the hard way when I first started freelance web design. I believe this is key in completing your project quickly and effectively.

There are many important components to building a solid website that will rank well in the search engines and last over the long haul. I recently had the opportunity to develop a small online booking system. This time round I was determined to make use of some development framework. Not for me the slow slog of writing all my code from scratch - surely we have moved beyond that now in web development?

The big question was - which framework to use? Since the advent of Ruby on Rails, development frameworks have become quite the flavour d'jour and there are now, well, maybe not thousands of them, but quite a few! The last time I heard there are about 80 development frameworks out there. I am not 100% user of this number, it could be a bit higher, it could be a bit more conservative (on the phpwact site you can find about 40 PHP frameworks listed). The point is, the web developer is now really spoilt for choice. Which is a problem in itself, since having too much choice can leave you dithering between different options.

This article is therefore about how I made my choice, which was CakePHP, and which factors I took into consideration.

Obviously, and certainly, I will get bombarded with "Why don't you try X framework, it is really much simpler to use..." type responses. That is quite OK, to each his own! But this is the choice I made and I am sticking to it. Frankly, the idea of going through another learning curve gives me the heeby-jeeby's....

I found that the selection criteria were not independent. In other words, once I have ruled out some frameworks due to some specific criteria, other factors came into play. It was therefore more a process of elimination than judging all the frameworks off a predefined set of criteria.

The first major selection point was: Ruby on Rails or not.

Obviously there is the attraction of using a brand new, hip, buzz-word hyped framework. You can't go wrong with something that is getting so much attention... or can you?

Let's look at some of the selection criteria that filtered out Ruby on Rails

1. Ease of installation and ability to run on shared hosting The problem is that most of my clients make use of a shared hosting environment. Can Ruby on Rails run on common-or garden variety type shared hosting? The answer was, I soon discovered - no. One needs to either have access your own private servers or run on a shared hosting environment that has Ruby on Rails preinstalled. Admittedly, there are a couple of them now starting up. 2. Minimize the learning curve Even though I knew that any new framework will involve a steep learning curve, I really did not have the guts to go through TWO learning curves - one for the language itself and one for the framework. I might still have been prepared to go through the learning curve though if it wasn't for the fact that RoR requires special hosting.

So basically the decision was: Not RoR. And based on criterion 2, I decided to stick to a PHP framework, and not go for something else based on Perl or something else since I've been developing in PHP for the past two, almost three years. Having said this, it is all very well to say that CakePHP allows you to use your PHP skills - because it is an object oriented framework/MVC based framework it has its own rich language infrastructure. You still need to learn the CakePHP terminology and the learning curve is pretty steep!

3. Ability to run on PHP 4 Although PHP 5 offers more object oriented features, once again, not all shared hosts offer PHP 5 out of the box. I decided that I wanted to stick to a framework that will offer backwards compatibility and enable me to run on most of the servers that I, as well as my clients, host on.

My further criteria came down to:

- User manual
- Examples and code snippets
- Screen casts and videos - although I do not see these as essential

5. Good support by the user community This, in combination with formal documentation is absolutely essential. All of these frameworks are pretty young and the documentation is also constantly evolving. Some documentation might be patchy in details. This is where the user support in terms of the community comes in. How active are the forums? Is there a bug tracker? Any other informal tutorials, write-ups, comments, blogs and other support?

6. Regular upgrades and bug fixes ..but not so close to each other that the software becomes unstable and unusable. Backward compatibility is also important.

Version number of the software can be used to indicate maturity.

* CakePHP
* Seagull Framework
* WACT - since 'disqualified' since the latest version now requires PHP 5
* Zoop
* CodeIgniter

The next step was a bit less scientific - but still fitted in with point 5 - how well is this Framework regarded? How much support does it generate in the 'community'.

I scouted through forums and followed links and surfed the net and tried to get a general feel - and overall, CakePHP did seem to come out tops. A similar check that one can do is the following - do a Google search for each of the frameworks and see how many results are returned. This will give you a good idea of the general support, number of tutorials, number of forum posts and general 'talked about' factor for the specific framework.
